Nikolai Demidov - The Art of Living Onstage

Revolutionary technique

The Art of Loving the Actors

Nikolai Demidov’s groundbreaking technique is rooted in the love for the actors and the facilitation of their creative process as a whole. Its aim is to support genuine true life onstage and the cultivation of an independent actor-creator, who uses all his inner creative resources and lives fully in the moment with no need for any pre-decision or preconception. It cultivates open perception of the environment (sensitivity), free reaction to stimuli and the creation of new reflexes (spontaneity), the live and tangible ability of sensations to take in emerging imaginary circumstances and it makes actors’ transformation a tangible practical feature of their art and not a miraculous exception.

Demidov’s path trains actors’ instrument as a whole and supports the development of their psychophysical and spiritual abilities through concrete scales, invented by Nikolai Demidov, which offer the actors an indispensable intimate lab that accompanies them throughout their whole carrier.

Nikolai Demidov developed his technique (or rather School of Acting as he calls it) between 1921 and 1953 and the process suggested by him made a strong impression on both the artistic and the scientific community of his contemporaries. The Soviet Russia characterized Demidov from “inconvenient” to “dangerous” and managed to bury his work and books for more that 70 years.

Margarita Laskina was the editor of the publication of Demidov’s heritage in the Russian language. His precious archive and his books were published between 2004 and 2009 and Russia got access to Demidov’s thoughts, ideals and artistic vision for the creation of the New Actor.

The seed of the introduction of Demidov to the western world is attributed to Vyacheslav Kokorin, a Russian actor and acting teacher, who had been applying Demidov’s Etudes in Russia already since the 1980s. The western world owes a great deal to professor Andrei Malaev Babel, who was the editor of the first publication of Demidov’s work in the English language in 2016. Andrei Malaev Babel focuses his work on the revival and spreading of Demidov’s School of Creative Freedom. He created the International Demidov Association and launched Acting and Teacher Certification Programs, offering a reliable training to Nikolai Demidov’s techniques, principles and artistic values.

The Demidov School of Acting has started living again, creating enthusiastic supporters all around the world.
