The Pedagogy of freedom
I do not know how to start.
What I have experienced since last January through Nikolai’s technique is revelatory and I could talk about it whole days and nights (I’ ve been doing it anyway).
There are many ways with which you can do something; in our case be an actor. There is no right or wrong way to do it. There is the truth though.
Truth is relentless and some time, no matter how much you deny it, she will knock the door of your house and, even if you won’t open, she will enter your living room uninvited, she will sit on your couch and, even if you keep doing your chores ignoring her, she will stay there staring at you inflicting petty discomfort.
Nikolai Demidov’s truth about how the art of acting should be perceived, stayed there patiently for decades, and even if it was long ignored by many let’s call them “uninviting hosts”, it remained unchanged because it was very much needed.
We crave for truth in life and we crave for life in our art.

Από το 2012, σπούδασε Αγγλική Φιλολογία στο ΕΚΠΑ και στο Ανατολικό Πανεπιστήμιο Φινλανδίας. Το 2019, αποφοίτησε από την Ανώτερη Σχολή Δραματικής Τέχνης «Αρχή» της Νέλλης Καρρά. Έχει συνεργαστεί, μεταξύ άλλων, με τους σκηνοθέτες: Barbara Eder, Pia Strietmann, Βασίλη Μαυρογεωργίου, Μιχάλη Κωνσταντάτο. Το 2023, ίδρυσαν, μαζί με την Όλγα Καπαγιορίδου, την εταιρεία θεάτρου KUNST Artistic Productions και ανέβασαν το έργο Η Αναρχική του David Mamet, στο “Από Μηχανής Θέατρο” στην Αθήνα και στο θέατρο “Αυλαία” στην Θεσσαλονίκη. Η Κατερίνα είναι μέλος του Demidov Studio Athens Lab από την αρχή της λειτουργίας του τον Ιανουάριο του 2021.
I have been working online on Demidov’s technique with my teacher Vicky Georgiadou since January 2021. Venturing in such a challenging way to acquire an acting technique, through online courses, proved to be equally compelling and fulfilling as when I had the courses in person, experiencing the same feeling exactly. The technique was there without any divergence. What I have learned from this technique is not to violate the life created by the words inside me. You aim for the truth born in the moment, instinctively, surrendering yourself to the impulse, the circumstances, the words and sounds generate. The actor now lives on stage instead of “acting.” The outcome is revelatory both for the actor and the observer.

I started practising Nikolai Demidov΄s scales and etudes under Vicky’s guidance. Following this path of work is something else. This “something else” comes naturally from the air around me, from my partner; but not from my mind. It is beyond my control, it is something unknown that motivates me, helps me grow and finally offers me the solid proof that I am constantly exposed to it, as long as I allow myself to feel it. And this is the most exciting thing that could happen to a young actor.

I put on some classical music, sat down, gently brought the paper in front of me and started writing. I was looking at the space around me and I was breathing. An amazing silence had just been generated inside me and around me. I was here, I was now, in the moment. Without knowing, without expecting, without wanting. Just here, now and I was just looking. Calm, quiet, peaceful and loosened up. This quality of being is already a great achievement for all of us in the laboratory. This quality of silence and automatic perception that just allows you to live.

Γεννήθηκε στην Αθήνα. Σπούδασε στην Ανώτερη Σχολή Δραματικής Τέχνης του Ωδείου Αθηνών και είναι μέλος του Demidov Studio Athens Lab από την αρχή της λειτουργίας του τον Ιανουάριο του 2021. Στο θέατρο έπαιξε στην παράσταση Ζορμπάς του Νίκου Καζαντζάκη σε σκηνοθεσία Γιάννη Κακλέα που ανέβηκε στο «Θέατρον» του Κέντρου Πολιτισμού «Ελληνικός Κόσμος» τον χειμώνα του 2022. Κινηματογραφικά εμφανίζεται στην ταινία του Νikolai Hamel Ο ραψωδός, και στη μικρού μήκους του Daniel Brandt Without us. Στην τηλεόραση εμφανίζεται στη σειρά Iq 160 στο Star και στη σειρά Η παραλία στην ΕΡΤ.
The first time we worked on Demidov’s etudes was at the Drama School “Arhi”, with our teacher Vicky Georgiadou. Those very first exercises generated within me a sense of trust in the technique, because you cannot do them “superficially”, as you usually do with some other exercises. It is as if these exercises bring the actors to the right place in order to be able to get familiar with the creative process, their own creative process. Demidov’s etudes, in an affective and rather affectionate way, help the actors to feel the truth of the moment, while simultaneously liberating them from unnecessary mechanisms. For those who believe it does make a difference, truth means something! In the field of the arts, this technique is a real treasure. The actor himself is responsible to nourish his art with this delicious truth (too obvious?). This technique does provide the steps which can make that possible, although there are so many things around that can prevent it. So, do such steps exist? I say they exist, and I find them precious.

Γεννήθηκε στο Ηράκλειο Κρήτης το 1991. Ήταν μέλος της θεατρικής ομάδας «Άντωση» με δάσκαλο τον Παντελή Καψάλη. Αποφοίτησε από την Ανώτερη Σχολή Δραματικής Τέχνης «Αρχή» της Νέλλης Καρρά (2020). Έχει παρακολουθήσει σεμινάριο σκηνοθεσίας με τον Αλέξη Αλάτση, την Άντζελα Μπρούσκου (τα όνειρα στην Αρχαία Τραγωδία), Γιάννη Σκουρλέτη (Ερωτόκριτος) και τον Andrei Malaev-Babel (Υποστήριξη και Συσσώρευση Χαρακτήρα). Ανέλαβε το εργαστήριο υποκριτικής για το πολιτιστικό πρόγραμμα που διοργανώθηκε από τους οργανισμούς Lalava και ANKAA Project (2022). Σχεδίασε τον ήχο και συνέθεσε την πρωτότυπη μουσική για την παράσταση του έργου Τίποτα Δικό Μου του Edward Bond στο θέατρο Skrow (2022). Έχει παίξει στην ταινία μικρού μήκους Λησμοσύνη του Νίκου Κατσόρχη. Συμμετείχε ως ντουέτο με την Αλεξάνδρα Παππά στο 5ο Φεστιβάλ Σύγχρονου Χορού στο «Τρένο στο Ρουφ» με την περφόρμανς Χαμάμ (2022). Έπαιξε στην παράσταση Εμένα με νοιάζει, διασκευή του ομώνυμου μυθιστορήματος της Γαλάτειας Γρηγοριάδου-Σουρέλη και σκηνοθεσία Πάρη Μαντόπουλου στα πλαίσια του «Όλη η Ελλάδα ένας Πολιτισμός 2023» που πραγματοποιήθηκε στο Αρχαίο Θέατρο Μαρώνειας. Παίζει, από το 2022, στην παράσταση PoiosTheleisnaGineis των Λευτέρη Καταχανά και Σοφίας Παλάντζα σε σκηνοθεσία Πάρη Μαντόπουλου, και από το 2023 στην παράσταση Error 404 των Λευτέρη Καταχανά και Σοφίας Παλάντζα. Είναι μέλος του Demidov Studio Athens Lab από την αρχή της λειτουργίας του τον Ιανουάριο του 2021.
In the out-of-script life, you are not aware of what is going to happen. So you just let yourself be. If something from within or around you ”moves” you, you just follow it. It can be a thought, an action, or a feeling. You just cannot schedule it.
That is exactly what Nikolai Demidov prompts the actor to do while living the in-the script life. And one has nothing to do but surrender to ‘now’. I am so eager to continue learning how not to do a single thing in order for everything to happen.

Γεννήθηκε το 1987 στην Αθήνα. Σπούδασε Χημικός Μηχανικός στο Ε.Μ.Π. Το 2020, αποφοίτησε από την Ανώτερη Σχολή Δραματικής Τέχνης “Αρχή” της Νέλλης Καρρά και είναι μέλος του Demidov Studio Athens Lab από την αρχή της λειτουργίας του τον Ιανουάριο του 2021. Ως ηθοποιός έχει συμμετάσχει στις μεγάλου μήκους ταινίες The City & The City των Χρήστου Πασσαλή και Σύλλα Τζουμέρκα και Listen της Μαρίας Ντούζα. Επίσης έχει παίξει στις θεατρικές παραστάσεις Τίποτα Δικό μου του Έντουαρντ Μποντ (καλλιτεχνική διεύθυνση Νέλλης Καρρά) και Ελέφαντας εγώ; της Μαριμίλλης Ασημακοπούλου. Επιπροσθέτως, έχει παρακολουθήσει εντατικό σεμινάριο με τον Αντρέι Μαλάεφ-Μπάμπελ, με θέμα “Υποστήριξη και Συσσώρευση Χαρακτήρα”.
I am so grateful that I met Vicky and that she introduced me to this revolutionary technique. I have been studying theatre since a very young age, and I am fortunate to have been trained in many acting methods. Every day, I gathered knowledge and I was determined to put what I learned into practice. I practised and trained, to return the next day to rehearse or perform with a little more confidence in my role. My perfectionism and self-criticism, however, filled my head with anxious thoughts, resulting in nothing satisfying. Each role unconsciously became a small calvary for me.
I can recall, when I first started working with Vicky, how it amazed me that simple exercises would develop and evolve into genuine life without any stress or effort. This feeling lasts to this very day.
Through the systematic practice of this intuitive technique, I learned how to trust myself. I realized that after all, I am not only what others see or define, as this is very limited. I learned to work with my weaknesses, leaving behind my social behavioural masks. I learned how to live on stage without crutches and a ready-made set of instructions. I learned how to react to the real stimulus, and not to invent something that isn’t there. Acting has nothing to do with “showing”. Acting is not just a spectacle. Theatre for me seeks the truth, the creation of new connections. Vicky will never initiate you to imitate but will guide you with love and patience to discover everything for yourself. Through Nikolai’s technique and under Vicky’s guidance, I learned to trust my instincts and not to “over-act”. I learned how to calm myself down and rest. I learned how to love myself and my art.

Η Αγγελική Καραφωτιά γεννήθηκε στη Νέα Υόρκη, το 1999. Είναι απόφοιτος της Ανώτερης Σχολής Δραματικής Τέχνης “ΑΡΧΗ”-Νέλλη Καρρά. Είναι επί πτυχίω φοιτήτρια στο Τμήμα Θεατρικών Σπουδών του Καποδιστριακού Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών και ταυτόχρονα σπουδάζει στο Μεταπτυχιακό Πρόγραμμα του Ινστιτούτου Δραματοθεραπείας “ΑΙΩΝ”. Έχει παρακολουθήσει μαθήματα υποκριτικής και φωνητικής από το 2012 με ειδίκευση στην αγωγή λόγου. Σήμερα εργάζεται ως καθηγήτρια προετοιμασίας υποψηφίων σπουδαστών Δραματικών Σχολών. Ακόμη, σε ότι αφορά τη μουσική, ως απόφοιτη του Μουσικού Σχολείου Αμμοχώστου, κατέχει πιστοποιημένη κατάρτιση στο πιάνο, στο σαντούρι και στη μουσική τεχνολογία. Το 2023, ίδρυσε την εταιρεία θεάτρου “FilaTeKouFila”, με την οποία έχει ήδη ανεβάσει την πρώτη της σκηνοθετική απόπειρα πάνω στο έργο του Ευριπίδη, Μήδεια, τον Ιούλιο της ίδιας χρονιάς στην Κύπρο. Έχει συνεργαστεί με σκηνοθέτες όπως τον Βασίλη Μαυρογεωργίου, Βασίλη Ανδρέου, Μαρία Αιγινίτου, Αθηνά Κάσιου, Ελένη Σμυρνιού, Νίκο Κιχέμ Κοτσαμπουγιούκη, Χρήστο Καραΐσκο, Ανδρέα Χρίστου κ.ά. Η γνωριμία της με το Demidov Studio Athens ξεκίνησε το 2021 και από τον Αύγουστο του 2023, είναι μέλος του Demidov Studio Athens Lab.
Three years have already passed since I got to know this way of work and it is extremely hard for me to sum up what I have experienced in just a few words. Not trying to do anything and everything happening on their own, as long as you’re honest to yourself, to your partner, to the process. Letting go of any control and unique things evolving, these are things worth living over and over again. I am deeply grateful for all this journey and very excited for what’s to come.

Γεννήθηκε στην Αθήνα το 1996. Το 2023, αποφοίτησε από την Ανώτερη Σχολή Δραματικής Τέχνης «Αρχή» της Νέλλης Καρρά. Την τριετία 2020 – 2023 εκπαιδεύτηκε στη Μέθοδο Ντεμίντοφ από τη Βίκυ Γεωργιάδου, στο πρώτο ολοκληρωμένο πρόγραμμα διδασκαλίας της μεθόδου σε Δραματική Σχολή στην Ελλάδα. Στο πλαίσιο των πτυχιακών παραστάσεων, συνεργάστηκε με τη Βίκυ Γεωργιάδου στο Κουκλόσπιτο του Ίψεν και με την Ρηνιώ Κυριαζή στον Οιδίποδα Τύραννο του Σοφοκλή. Έχει παρακολουθήσει σεμινάρια και εργαστήρια υποκριτικής με τον Ευρυπίδη Λασκαρίδη, Γιάννη Κόκα, Ελένη Σκότη κ.ά. Από τον Αύγουστο του 2023, είναι μέλος του Demidov Studio Athens Lab.
My acquaintance with Demidov’s technique and writings started a year ago, through our teacher, Vicky Georgiadou. The first thing I remember treasuring deep inside me is the word “embryo” and how inexplicably I surrendered when I heard Vicky reading us the chapter devoted to the “embryo” and its role in actor’s life.
I cannot forget the experience I had a few months after we started, which came with the daily practice on Demidov’s scales. One day, while I was doing my scale work with my violin, I noticed that when I was looking at the notes ahead, my sound was “disturbed”, not clear. Every time I looked just at the note in front of me, the sound was clear and I felt calmer.
Then, the connection with our etudes and Demidov appeared before my eyes. The Present, and the profound trust in what happens Here and Now , in order for that… something to be born. These were words that were introduced to me anew.
Throughout the process, through interacting with my partners, I come closer to the power of Truth. In a magic way, you feel it when you follow it and when you don’t. In the first case, you celebrate! In the second case, you celebrate it again, because now you are able to feel the difference!

The unique Demidov’s Technique takes you by the hand and with disarming simplicity and clarity opens the magical windows of creativity. It teaches you that there is neither right nor wrong. Only Calm and Freedom exist. Through simple ways and “exercises”, Demidov helps you cultivate Calm and Freedom. These exercises allow the individual to surrender to his first urge, the impulse of the Moment. An entirely new world is created out of nowhere. Only by speaking 5 or 10 words.
My heartfelt thanks go to Vicky Georgiadou and to my dear friends and fellow partners for this incredible experience. Working with them and accompanied by Demidov’s techniques, I become a child again. I find myself in a new path without knowing the final destination. I only have the deep desire to walk with them, to explore and discover. Just as it is when we are children!
